Quitting Facebook
No, not me. Don't be daft. Huffington Post published an article late last year with 11 reasons to quit Facebook in 2014. I think they're all ridiculous and will explain why here.
1. Nobody actually wants to just read about what you're doing anymore (aka pictures are better)
Clearly I'm a bit biased, but I think words are lovely and can do just as much, if not more, than a picture of your breakfast.
2. Facebook makes it impossible for you to stay "private"
While your name will always appear, you can set all your privacy settings to max so that when your profile does pop up in a search, nothing will actually show. This whole Facebook/privacy thing really grinds my gears. You only show what you give permission to show.
3. Your parents (and even grandparents) are now watching your every move
Don't friend them, and see above.
4. Or they're posting photos of you that you would never want anyone to see
The only semi-legit one. Talk to them, or untag yourself.
5. Facebook is even keeping track of what you don't say
OK, so this is also semi-legit, but if you're using the internet, you're being tracked. Get used to it.
6. Facebook makes you feel less positive about your life
I can't believe this is true, and if it really is the case, unfollow those who brag, and perhaps Facebook isn't the problem.
7. The "friend suggestions" tell you to befriend people you don't even know
Don't friend them.
8. You realize you only know and care about only 20 people out of your 1,000 friends
Not a reason to quit Facebook. It's a reason to think before you add, or at the very least, block or unfriend. It's not that hard.
9. Your friends keep announcing their engagements
If your friends announcing their engagements makes you feel bad, again, it's probably not Facebook's fault.
10. The excessive ads are about to ruin the whole experience
AdBlock.
11. It makes getting over a breakup really hard
Don't share your personal details on the same social media you're also complaining isn't private enough. Jeez...
So there you go.
While Facebook could be far, far better, and I have absolutely no doubt that something else will come along and wipe it off the face of the earth, these are not reasons to quit it. They're reasons to think a bit more, and be smart about your online activity. Nothing new.
